How to choose an African safari package
Start with who's travelling and what you want to see. The right package flows from that, not the other way round. Six starting points our specialists use.
First-time safari
A 7 to 10 night Southern Africa loop is the classic entry point. Sabi Sand or a private Kruger concession delivers reliable Big Five sightings within a day of landing, and Cape Town adds a soft-landing city break at either end.
Honeymoons
Pair the Okavango Delta with a beach finish on Benguerra, Zanzibar or the Seychelles. Water-based safari in the Delta, then barefoot island days. Most lodges offer a private honeymoon dinner and turndown on request.
Families
Choose lodges with dedicated family suites, in-house kids' programmes and no minimum age on game drives. Sabi Sand and the Waterberg work well for younger children; the Serengeti and Okavango suit teens.
Big Five and photography
Private concessions in Sabi Sand, Timbavati and Madikwe allow off-road tracking and night drives, giving photographers the angles closed to Kruger main camp visitors. Add a specialist photographic vehicle on request.
The Great Migration
For the Mara River crossings, base yourself in the northern Serengeti between July and September. For calving season, the southern Serengeti in February. Mobile camps follow the herds, so lodge choice depends on the month.
Multi-country journeys
Combine South Africa's Sabi Sand with Botswana's Okavango Delta and Zimbabwe's Victoria Falls in a single 14 to 17 night circuit. Light-aircraft transfers keep the transitions short and border formalities minimal.
Best time to go on an African safari
May to October is peak season for game viewing across Southern and East Africa. The bush thins, animals gather at water and mornings are cool enough for long drives.
Dry season, peak game viewing
Cool mornings, sparse foliage and animals concentrating around waterholes. Best across Kruger, Sabi Sand, Okavango Delta, Serengeti and Masai Mara. Great Migration river crossings peak July to September.
Green season, lower rates and birding
Dramatic afternoon storms, newborn wildlife and migratory birds arrive. Fewer vehicles at sightings and lodge rates 20 to 40 percent lower. Ideal for photography and repeat safari-goers.

Price varies with season (May to October carries a premium), lodge choice (flagship camps like Singita, Royal Malewane and andBeyond command higher rates) and how much of the travel is by private light aircraft versus road. International flights are quoted separately.

When is the best time to go on an African safari?
May to October is the dry season and delivers the strongest game viewing across Southern and East Africa. The Great Migration river crossings in the Serengeti and Masai Mara peak between July and September. November to April is the green season, with lower rates, dramatic skies and excellent birding.
Which African countries do your packages cover?
South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Namibia, Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda, plus the Indian Ocean islands of Mozambique, Zanzibar, the Seychelles and Mauritius for beach add-ons.
How many days do I need for an African safari?
Seven nights is the practical minimum: two nights in transit or Cape Town and five in a game reserve. Ten to twelve nights lets you combine two regions comfortably. Fourteen nights and above opens up multi-country journeys with beach or Victoria Falls finishes.
Are your safari packages customisable?
Yes. Every itinerary on this page is a starting point. We adjust dates, lodge choice, party size, pace and add-ons (helicopter flips, private vehicle, spa treatments, gorilla trekking) to fit each traveller.
Do you offer family safari packages with children?
Yes. We book lodges with family suites, in-house children's programmes and, where relevant, no minimum age on game drives. Sabi Sand and Madikwe in South Africa are our most-booked reserves for families with younger children.
Are your packages ATOL or SATSA protected?
African Safari Home is a SATSA-bonded specialist. SATSA (Southern Africa Tourism Services Association) membership provides financial protection on the ground portion of your trip. International flights, when booked through us, are protected by the issuing airline or agent.
